Livelihoods, Empowerment & Agroforestry Project (LEAF)

LEAF works towards poverty reduction of small and marginal farmers in the northwest of Bangladesh through the development of human and institutional capacities and a better management of their resources – especially through agroforestry. The central theme is to encourage farmers’ organisations to take charge of their own development. It involves equipping them to identify their development priorities and implement joint plans; subsequently linking them with service providers and local government agencies; encouraging and equipping them to exploit the market; and developing a critical mass of farmer joint-action through interaction between geographically close groups. While LEAF works with the demand side of different services (BDS, technical services, financial services) a parallel project SAAKTI works with service providers. LEAF also promotes an enabling environment for these farmers and their organisations. For more information, see SDC Bangladesh or Intercooperation Bangladesh.

LEAF has developed a so-called marketing extension tool that support the rural poor to understand the market they operate in and to improve their position: download the marketing extension tool here.

In 2008, the E+I section mandated a comparison of the M4P framework and the sustainable livelihood approach (SLA). As a part of this comparison, case studies of the LEAF-SHAAKTI projects (as an example of SHL) and of the Katalyst project (as an example of M4P) - all SDC projects in Bangladesh were conducted. Download the case study here. Information on the Katalyst project is provided on the M4P project experience site.
